Rehabilitation projects in Super Cyclone Affected Areas of Orissa


        Relief and rehabilitation measures to the tune of Rs. 117 crore have so far been

        undertaken in the State of Orissa to provide succour to the Super Cyclone victims and

        many more measures are under various stages of implementation. Brief details of

        projects for which assistance has been released to State Govt are as under: - 

  • Ex-gratia to next of kin of the deceased

An amount of around Rs.38.105 crore was remitted to the Government of Orissa for disbursement of ex-gratia to the next of kin of the deceased at the rate of Rs.50,000/- per death.

  • Rehabiliation of fishermen families

2500 families in the Puri, Jagatsinghpur and Kendrapada districts were rehabilitated with financial assistance from the PMNRF by the Voluntary Health Association of India (VHAI). Under this project a set of one boat, one net and a transistor was provided to a group of five fishermen. The project has helped relieve the indebtedness of the fisher folk and they have started earning to the tune of Rs.10-12,000/- per month per person during fishing season.  During the off season they are now able to earn Rs.3,000/- per month. The total cost involved in the project was about Rs. 90 lakh. The project has been implemented.

  • Rehabilitation of Artisans

1000 families of Artisans viz. Potters, Women Grass Mat Weavers, Cotton Fabric Weavers, Women Coir Weavers have been rehabilitated by the VHAI. The project has helped in rehabilitating traditional artisans in 13 cyclone affected villages. 13 work cum storage sheds were also set up and additional provisions made for marginalized grass-mat maker, bamboo/palm leaf weaver families etc. These efforts have addressed the needs of the targeted groups. The total cost involved in the project was about Rs. 91 lakh. The project has been implemented.

  • Construction of schools cum cyclone shelters

1257 Primary and High schools cum cyclone shelters have been taken up in the cyclone affected districts. Funds to the tune of Rs. 63.89 crore have been released for the purpose. So far 1148 schools cum cyclone shelters have been completed.

  • Cyclone Shelters

42 Cyclone Shelters in Kendrapada, Bhadrak and Balasore district are to be constructed within the 10 Km. zone from high tide line. For further details please contact Orissa State Disaster Mitigation Authority, Government of Orissa. Funds to the tune of Rs. 15.30 crore have been released for the project.
