Rehabilitation projects in Gujarat being funded out PMNRF in the earthquake areas of the State

Rs. 402 crore have been approved to provide succour to the earthquake victims . Brief details of measures so far undertaken are as follows: - 

  • Food items, Medicines, Blankets etc. worth Rs. 1.69 crore were provided out of the PMNRF and quickly air lifted and rushed to the affected areas.  

  • An amount of Rs.60 crore was remitted from PMNRF to the State Government for disbursement to the next of kin of the deceased as a measure of immediate financial assistance.

  • 7500 rural artisans/agriculturists have been rehabilitated by a renowned NGO “Self Employed Women’s Association” (SEWA) with financial assistance from the PMNRF. The total cost in the project was about Rs. 4.93 crore. The project has been implemented.

  • As safe drinking water was not available, two water purification plants at a cost of Rs.74 lakh were quickly air lifted and installed at Bhuj.

  • The earthquake severely damaged a large number of schools. Work was undertaken for reconstruction and repair of 128 damaged schools, provision of furniture viz. student desks, teacher’s table, computer table and black boards, quality improvement of Education and construction of teacher’s training centre at Gandhinagar. So far an amount of Rs. 104.70 crore has been released for the purpose.

  • As many as 185 Irrigation Dams were damaged in the earthquake.  Repair of these dams has been undertaken and completed. Repair of Hamirsar canal and the renovation of Tera lake at Bhuj has also been done. Funds to the tune of Rs. 2.25 crore were released for the purpose. Works have been completed.

  • The Gujarat Institute of Desert Ecology, which was completely destroyed, has been rehabilitated at a cost of Rs. 1.10 crore.

  • The District Hospital at Bhuj was completely destroyed in the earthquake, and has been reconstructed as a 300 bed ‘state-of-the-art’ teaching hospital at an expense of Rs.113.49 crore from the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund. The hospital has been constructed using ‘Base Isolation’ Technology with technical assistance provided by the New Zealand Earthquake Cluster.  The technology has been used for the first time in India and would enable the hospital building to withstand major earthquakes.

  • An amount of Rs. 5.23 crore was released for the watershed programme in Kutch.
